Vasomotor Rhinitis

Vasomotor rhinitis causes swelling of blood vessels in your nose. It can involve intermittent watery nasal drainage, congestion of blood vessels in the mucus membrane, and sneezing episodes. The condition’s cause isn’t clear, but it can be uncomfortable. The following is everything you need to know to recognize if you have vasomotor rhinitis.

Symptoms

Vasomotor rhinitis has several symptoms. They include excessive mucus production, stuffy or runny nose, and postnasal drip. The symptoms can last from a few days to several days and can be intermittent or constant. Sometimes the complications can be similar to that of allergic rhinitis. Which include:

  • Ear infections
  • Decreased sense of smell
  • Asthma and
  • Chronic sinusitis

As a result, you need to seek immediate medical assistance once you notice these symptoms.

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms, doctors can perform tests by examining the throat and nose. In addition, they can perform blood and skin tests to eliminate allergies and check if your immune system is functioning correctly. Doctors can also perform a CT scan or endoscope to check if you have any sinus problems.

Management and Treatment

Vasomotor rhinitis management can take several steps. One of them entails identifying your triggers and avoiding them. They may include spicy foods, alcohol, strong cooking odors, perfumes, specific medications, or stress. In addition, you can also follow the treatment prescribed by your doctor to reduce the symptoms as much as possible.

Vasomotor rhinitis can often be alleviated with over-the-counter medications such as oral decongestants and saline nasal sprays, among other medications. However, if the symptoms are severe, you may require prescription drugs. The medications can range from ipratropium, olopatadine hydrochloride, and azelastine. Surgery may help alleviate symptoms like nasal polyps and septum in situations where you have an underlying medical condition. A procedure like vidian neurectomy disrupts parasympathetic and sympathetic fibers in the mucosa and reduces rhinorrhea.
